Gastric balloon

The gastric band is a surgical, reversible and adjustable treatment that is performed by laparoscopy and that consists of the reduction of the stomach. This achieves weight loss and an improvement in body image.

It is an intervention that is performed by laparoscopy , it consists of the implantation of an inflatable band around the upper part of the stomach to limit its capacity and thus the person feels satisfied with less food.

It requires general anesthesia since the silicone ring is placed with tiny holes in the abdomen. It divides the stomach into 2 and once it is located it is inflated with serum.

It is a reversible treatment, the person can leave the band on for the rest of their lives or remove it when they have reached their ideal weight.

This procedure is compatible for both male and female patients.

Technique

The band acts like a belt placed on the upper, outer part of the stomach. When adjusted, it creates a small reservoir with a capacity of 30 to 50 ml, which communicates with the rest of the stomach through a narrow channel.

The upper reservoir provides a feeling of satiety and decreases the amount of food eaten. It does not have metabolic complications, diarrhea or vitamin losses. Post-operative recovery is fast.
